Disrupting education's current structure and personalizing education through digital learning can help more children succeed faster, says Michael B. Horn, executive director of the Innosight Institute, who promoted this theory at a recent Seattle conference. SeattlePI.com/The Associated Press (9/12)

Nev. district bets on ambitious iPad program for math improvements The Clark County School District in Nevada this year is launching a pilot iPad program for 1,150 middle- and high-school students in four schools, the largest such initiative of its kind. The iPad 2 devices will be loaded with an interactive Fuse Algebra 1 app from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. How schools are using game-creation technology to teach critical skills More schools are teaching students important skills by allowing them to create digital games. The online game-creation platform Gamestar Mechanic, which is designed to build curriculum-aligned skills, is now being used in 800 schools as a learning tool. "When students make a game they have to model the system and have a deeper mastery of the subject. It's a deeper learning experience," said Alan Gershenfeld, president of E-Line Media, the developer of Gamestar Mechanic. "The process also incorporates 21st century skills -- game design requires that." T.H.E. Journal (9/12)
Large districts face challenges implementing school technology Large urban school districts face complicated challenges when implementing new classroom and school technology. In Boston and Chicago schools, educator buy-in proved a crucial component to the success of districtwide technology programs. Meanwhile scalability and ensuring new technology programs are implemented equally throughout hundreds of district schools also are concerns in large districts. T.H.E. Journal (9/12)
How to compare traditional IT costs against the cloud Comparing the cost of cloud computing with traditional IT systems can be tricky, writes Rob Livingstone, a chief information officer and author. It's important to factor in all the costs associated with moving to the cloud, including the expense of shutting down the old equipment. The decision may turn on whether you've gotten the full value of your on-site technology before making the switch. CFO.com (9/8)
Obama promotes federal spending for school facilities President Barack Obama released his jobs plan Monday, and traveled Tuesday to an Ohio high school, to advocate for part of the plan that secures $25 billion for school renovations -- such as energy efficiency upgrades, asbestos removal and technology installation -- and $5 billion for improvements at community colleges. About 40% of the K-12 funding would go to the nation's 100 largest districts. States would dole out the remainder, with rural districts receiving priority.
