  • Mixed messages on holiday inventories
Retailers looking to have enough merchandise to satisfy holiday shoppers without overstocks that will lead to the need for deep discounts may be erring on the side of slightly higher inventories this season, according to a recent survey. However, ports and rail companies say shipments are down and retailers including Stage Stores and Charming Shoppes say they'll stock less this season. Shoppers at J.C. Penney, Sears and Kohl's bought fewer pairs of Levi's last quarter, after the company raised prices to offset higher cotton and commodity costs, said CEO Blake Jorgensen. The company turned to discounting to clear out fall styles, a move that, along with NRF's forecast of a modest 2.8% increase in holiday sales, has executives cautious about the upcoming season.
