  • U.S. retailers expect holiday sales to rise 2.8%
U.S. holiday sales are expected to total $465.6 billion, up 2.8% from last year, according to NRF's annual survey. Sales will beat the 10-year average of 2.6% but will be well short of the 5.2% jump last year, the group said. "While businesses remain concerned over the viability of the economic recovery, there is no doubt that the retail industry is in a better position this year to handle consumer uncertainty than it was in 2008 and 2009," said President and CEO Matthew Shay. • NRF counsel says bank has only itself to blame
Bank of America has felt the fallout from its decision to start charging debit-card holders $5 per month, to make up for new caps on swipe fees. "Retailers are all about honest, open-market competition. The banks, though, have been socking it to retailers and consumers for years with hidden swipe fees -- that's where the anger comes from," said NRF general counsel Mallory Duncan in an interview with Neil Cavuto on Fox.
